Hi Members, I'm reviewing passive cell balancing circuit design and bms algorithm/ logic for triggering/ performing it from an LFP manufacturer. I'm familiar with the concepts of cell balancing and design in general. I'm curious if there are any tips or things to look for when designing these circuits or any best practices to implement in general. The manufacturer is using MC33771 IC for cell balancing.

Hello Vidyadhar,

The MC33771 is a good way to balance cells, sometimes if the cost is a concern and enough board space is available then even discrete MOSFETs can be used as this solution is cheaper to implement.

Since balancing converts the excess energy into heat, you need to make sure that the heat-dissipating components like balancing resistors and the IC itself are physically far away from things like ADCs and voltage references. Also, make sure your traces are thick enough for the rated balance current.

Other than that most things are straightforward since the MC33771 does most of the complex tasks.
